The World Human Rights Cities Forum (WHRCF) marked its tenth anniversary from 7-10 October 2020. Markus Möstl, senior legal researcher at the International Centre for the Promotion of Human Rights at the Local and Regional Levels under the auspices of UNESCO, contributed to the online Human Rights Paper Presentation Session and shared his thoughts on the integrated pursuit of human rights and the Sustainable Development Goals at the local level.
Cities and local authorities are the linchpin when it comes to addressing global challenges such as poverty, inequality, climate change and conflict. Indeed, “[t]he sustainable development fight will be won or lost in our cities” – this was the sentiment of the 10th World Urban Forum which took place in the United Arab Emirates in February 2020.
