Participants of the 5th Academy and Conference “Human Rights Go Local: What Works” under the theme “Local Governments and Human Rights-Based Budgeting: Pathways to Accountability” gave highly positive feedback in the post‑event survey.
Respondents mainly came from Europe and Asia/Pacific, with an almost equal gender balance and a majority of researchers and local government staff. Almost all (90%) found that the methods, formats and timing of the Academy were suitable, and all respondents said they will use the knowledge gained in their daily work. Participants particularly valued the interactive and inclusive format:
“The open discussions and pragmatic access to the topics.”
“The ability and encouragement to engage even if not a panelist, demonstrates equity in practice and creates a safe space while building trust. This experience means we are applying human rights principles in the conduct of the quite substantive HRGL Academy, which is why I continue to recommend it to others.”
The high quality of content and diversity of speakers were also frequently highlighted:
“I liked a) the variety of topics presented so as the approach is holistic, showing different aspects of the topic b) the combination of presenting best practices and examples that may inspire ideas. Last but not least, the speakers provided food for thought, were high-standard.”
“I appreciated the topics covered, as they approached the issue from multiple perspectives and were very enlightening.”
The Academy’s strong practical orientation was seen as especially valuable:
“The sessions were very practical and grounded in real cases, which made the learning immediately relevant and applicable. I also valued the diversity of perspectives, as it enriched the discussions and helped me rethink my own approaches.”
90% of respondents would recommend or highly recommend the Academy, underlining its relevance, quality and impact for local human rights work.
