Tackling fragmentation: harnessing sports for social change.
Modern societies in many cases still remain divided by gender, race, religion, and sexual orientation – divisions that often lead to exclusion and inequality. These fractures threaten the resilience and quality of life in our cities.
Local authorities play a crucial role in building inclusive and sustainable communities. Sport is a powerful yet underutilised tool to address these challenges. It fosters health, social cohesion, and intercultural understanding. By investing in inclusive sports infrastructure and programs, cities can create healthier, more connected, and equitable communities.
At the Centre, we empower local governments to unlock the potential of sport as a driver of positive change, promoting equality, social cohesion and human rights for all. Learn how we make this happen!
Driving social inclusion through sports
Sports have the unique ability to break down barriers, foster unity, and promote social integration within communities. By creating inclusive spaces for participation, they bring together individuals from diverse backgrounds, encouraging collaboration, mutual understanding, and shared experiences. In addition, sports serve as a powerful educational tool for young and old, teaching values such as fair play, respect, and teamwork that extend far beyond the playing field.
Moreover, sports serve as a catalyst for intercultural understanding, providing a platform for dialogue and self-expression. They build sustainable bridges between communities, paving the way for peaceful and respectful coexistence.

Through our consultancy work, we have successfully implemented sports-based initiatives that drive social inclusion, empower marginalised groups, and promote human rights. Here are some of our success stories:
We supported 54 local authorities across the Union of the Comoros in designing and implementing inclusive sports programmes. These initiatives, which included swimming, cycling, running, and triathlon, were developed to promote the human rights of children, young people, girls, and women. By encouraging participation in sport, we helped create opportunities for empowerment, equality, and community engagement.
In Plovdiv, Bulgaria, we worked with 160 segregated Roma children to improve their language and social skills while fostering integration into the wider community. By linking sport, leisure activities, and school learning, we successfully reduced school dropout rates—particularly among girls—ensuring that 100 % of the children completed the school year. This initiative highlighted the transformative power of sport in breaking down barriers and building brighter futures.
At our “Toolkit for Urban Inclusion” workshop in Amman, Jordan, we brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including local politicians, municipal administrators, sports organisers, teachers, civil society representatives, and local business leaders. Together, we explored strategies to develop inclusive and cohesive sports programmes led by municipalities. This collaborative effort fostered dialogue, innovation, and practical solutions to strengthen social inclusion through sport.
