Human Rights Day: Meaningful Change Begins Close to Home

Posted on in: Categories News

Today, on December 10th, as we celebrate International Human Rights Day, we take a moment to reflect on the vital importance of guaranteeing and upholding human rights for all.

At our Centre, we are deeply committed to the realisation of SDG 11, which aims for cities and human settlements that are inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable. Eleanor Roosevelt’s timeless words remind us why this mission matters so profoundly:

“Where, after all, do universal human rights begin? In small places, close to home – so close and so small that they cannot be seen on any maps of the world. Yet they are the world of the individual person; the neighbourhood he lives in; the school or college he attends; the factory, farm or office where he works. Such are the places where every man, woman and child seeks equal justice, equal opportunity, equal dignity without discrimination. Unless these rights have meaning there, they have little meaning anywhere. Without concerned citizen action to uphold them close to home, we shall look in vain for progress in the larger world.”

Eleanor Roosevelt reminds us that transformational change begins with local action. In today’s rapidly globalising and interconnected world, local governments play a crucial role in implementing human rights. As democratic institutions and governments, which are closest to the people, local authorities are uniquely positioned to understand, address and respond to the needs, challenges and aspirations of people. Cities are where rights become reality – through fair governance, inclusive policies, and equitable public services.

Turning Human Rights Into Action: How We Support Local Governments

At our Centre, we work shoulder-to-shoulder with municipalities and institutions to make human rights a reality at the local level. We provide tailored consultations and capacity-building opportunities for cities committed to strengthening their human rights accountability. Some of our specialized consulting solutions include:

By embracing human rights principles, cities can build fair governance, inclusive policies, and equitable public services, which leave no one behind.
